Ideal time to come to DePaul is 10-15 days prior to the first day of the class. This will give you sufficient time to discuss your prerequisite phase (PPA) with your advisors. It will also give you enough time to search for an on-campus job (or assistantship) and also adjust yourself to the place.
Do get your syllabus/curriculum details along with your application packets. You may get them waived after coming here by producing the necessary syllabus/curriculum details and if the department decides in your favor.
Bring as much money as you are permitted - initial expenses can be quite high. Here is an estimate of the typical start-up expenses for the first month:
You are arriving in a new land, so this question is a very common one. Make sure you bring summer clothes - as you will be faced with some warm weather upon landing, but also bring a few sweaters as fall hits pretty fast. Bring some personal items, mementos and pictures, they can help you avoid being homesick. Carry some start-off dishes, maybe even some masalas to cook with before you go and equip your kitchen. Because of your busy schedule, you won't get much time for laundry so bring at least 15 undergarments. Most of the apartment complexes have laundry services, which include washing and drying. All you have to do is throw in your clothes add some detergent and put in some coins and an hour or so later, you are done! It's advisable that you come to the States and buy the detergent and other cleaning soaps, it works out more efficiently that way. Bringing jackets from India may not be a good idea as they are not as effective and durable as the one you get in Chicago. Finally, bring some petty cash to carry you through the first couple of months. Carry some spending money while you travel, in case you need to catch a taxi or pay for the bus fares and so forth. Have fun packing! :)
Books change each year and therefore, the book you may have might not be up-to-date. The books can be bought at a cheaper price if bought second hand or used. However, after one quarter you know what books you need for the next semester and can then buy them in India, at a cheaper price. Also you can ask current students what books to bring with you if they share the same subject.
Another good idea is to use the library for your supply of books! No, we are not kidding! DePaul Library is interconnected to many other libraries in the state and you can get your books from here itself, most of the time. It also has a vast store of e-books and journals online, so just make sure you check that before you actually go and buy one.
