A Word From The Library
ONCE YOU GRADUATE: ACCESS TO RESEARCH SOURCES

Congratulations to this year's graduates!

For those of you finishing your CTI programs this year, you should be aware of your Alumni library privileges and other sources for quality information in your field. If you ever need to research technologies, industries or vendors, you may sometimes need to go beyond the free Web to find in-depth, reliable information.

With your DePaul Alumni ID, you can still use DePaul’s online resources such as Books 24 X 7, ACM Digital Library and Gartner, but you need to access them from a DePaul library or campus lab.

Obtain your DePaul Alumni ID by contacting Alumni Relations:

  • Online: [Requires DePaul alumni username and password]
  • In person - Loop Campus DePaul Center Room 9400
  • By telephone - (800) 4DP-1898

If you’ll be relocating to another city, be aware that most public universities allow on-site public access to online resources, since they are funded by taxpayers.

More information about Alumni library privileges is available at the Library Web site.

For more information, please send an email to Courtney Greene

Information From The Faculty
NIH MOLECULAR SCREENING LIBRARY GRANT FOR $2.4 MILLION AWARDED
DePaul University, at the School of Computer Science, Telecommunications and Information Systems (CTI), will participate in an NIH funded project for Molecular Libraries Screening Instrumentation entitled "MALDI-TOF for high throughput signal transduction inhibitor screening." DePaul is collaborating with several institutions including the University of Chicago Ben May Cancer Institute and Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge. The Ben May Cancer Institute is the leading organization. The leading researcher at DePaul CTI is Dave Angulo.

For this project, high throughput screening will be performed utilizing mass spectrometry, which allows using the change in mass of peptide probes as a screening assay with a tremendous ability to multiplex and increase throughput. If an assay follows a chemical change in some organic molecule, its mass shift can be detected along with dozens of other organic molecules in a single pass. The mass pattern of the test sample will be compared to controls, and databases, tandem mass spectrometry, or both will be utilized to determine what kind of chemical modifications were made.

The group of researchers are planning on assaying extracts from cells treated with individual compounds from a library of small molecules for multiple signal transduction pathways in a single experiment. Software will be utilized to recognize changes in the relative abundance of different mass species so that any small molecules that affect one or more signaling pathways can be flagged for further analysis. The group has demonstrated capability to screen 10,000 compound libraries by this assay. Their initial work will involve screening tyrosine kinase inhibitors and will target relevant signaling pathways, such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, stress, metabolism, etc. These high throughput screening assays may help researchers investigate cancer and other diseases.

This work was funded by the National Institutes of Health through the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research, Grant R01 HG3864. Information on the Molecular Libraries Roadmap Initiative can be obtained from http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/molecularlibraries/
For more information, please send an email to David Angulo

Opportunities For Undergraduates
COOPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS
DePaul is helping to place CTI undergraduates in extended internships through the Cooperative Education (Co-op) Program. Co-op is an educational approach which enables students to integrate classroom study with periods of supervised, paid work experiences related to their major, concentration, and professional goals. Students work year round (48 weeks) at 20-25 hours/week with the same employer for a minimum of 1 year and up to 3 years.

Benefits of Co-op positions include:
  1. Graduate with one to three years of professional work experience
  2. Earn income to offset college expenses
  3. Earn academic credit while fulfilling your Junior Year Experiential Learning Requirement
  4. Build a career oriented work record to increase your marketability upon graduation
  5. Explore career options and develop a professional network within your major field of study
  6. Have your work placement indicated on your official DePaul University transcript
Currently, there are CTI related Co-op positions available with Panasonic, JP Morgan Chase, Befreer.com, Village of Buffalo Grove, and Argonne National Laboratory. Students who are interested in these positions can learn more by logging into Erecruiting and search by selecting the “Co-op” box. For information about the CO-OP program and eligibility requirements, students may contact Leigh Berkowitz, Assistant Director Co-op or Dr. James T. Yu at CTI.

Events
THE FIRST IT CAREER FORUM IN HCI, ECT, AND IS
The HCI, ECT, and IS PCs hosted the first IT Career Forum in HCI, ECT, and IS event on Friday, November 4, 2005. John Fisher, CIO at Smith Bucklin Corporation and the Chair of CTI Leadership Council, welcomed all the participants and kicked off the networking event. Programs in human computer interaction, e-commerce technology, and information systems prepare students for in-demand skills of the new economy. Graduates from these programs enjoy high employment rates (above 90%) and successful careers at corporations such as IBM, Motorola, and Hewitt Associates. IT executives, employers, alumni, and faculty members met with students and provided one-on-one exchanges with them about career development. The event was an overwhelming success -- interest in HCI, ECT and IS is stronger than ever. The feedback from students and alumni is extremely positive. A total of 135 people participated in this event. Faculty members in these three areas (HCI, ECT, and IS) are planning to host a similar event in Spring 2006.

Announcements From Student Organizations
EARTHQUAKE RELIEF IN PAKISTAN

An earthquake struck South Asia on October 8 ruining entire villages in northern Pakistan and parts of Kashmir, India, and Afghanistan. Over 2 million have been left homeless; these figures include thousands of children. The hardest-hit areas are mountainous regions that have harsh winters. Many villages in this region are inaccessible by land. Helicopters are being used, but funding is inadequate to continue delivering relief goods where they are needed most. The cold weather has already set in leaving millions of people stranded with no shelter and, in some cases, no food or water.

Money is desperately needed to provide assistance. The Pakistani Student Association at DePaul urges you to donate to help the earthquake victims before more lives are lost. Every dollar you give will help the victims re-build their lives. Please donate generously!

A box for donations is located in the fourth floor reception area.

Competitions
GAMES FOR GIRLS PROGRAMMING COMPETITION
Win $1000 in Games for Girls Programming Competition

ChicTech, an outreach program of the University of Illinois’ Department of Computer Science, extends an open invitation for college women to participate in the second annual Games for Girls Programming Competition (G4G). Applications must be submitted by December 23, 2005 and completed projects are due by March 13, 2006.

G4G was conceived in response to research indicating that boys enjoy a relatively greater degree of confidence with computers because they spend more time as children playing computer games. The research suggests that this difference in confidence contributes to the gender imbalance seen in the field of Computer Science.

Designed to encourage the development of computer games that appeal to middle- and high-school aged girls while fostering the development of communities of college women majoring in computer-related disciplines, G4G is a contest that invites teams of women to design and implement a computer game for younger girls.

The competition is sponsored by Microsoft Corporation. G4G will award each member of the winning team $1000. Other prizes will be presented to second and third place teams.

The winning entry will be a collaborative effort involving approximately four college women. It will be created using GameMaker, a game design platform that supplies design flexibility and requires minimal programming. Projects will be evaluated on technical merit, entertainment value, and creativity.

The competition is open to all college women currently residing in the United States. Each student team must submit an on-line application by December 23, 2005. Visit the web site to complete an application:
http://g4g.cs.uiuc.edu.
