Students, come learn how to maximize your career potential with a degree from DePaul's College of Computing and Digital Media. Diane will answer your questions, one-on-one, and tell you how to get your IT career off the ground.

Who is Diane Brown?
Diane started her IT career in 1980, as a programmer/analyst for both a small consulting firm and then for Wickes Corporate. In 1986, she was taken on as a systems engineer in data networking at Northern Trust. Some years later, she moved over to IBM, then earned her M.S. in Computer Science from DePaul in 1995. She joined a new project management team at IBM in 1998 before leaving IBM and eventually joining JP Morgan Chase Bank in 2007 as a Technical Project Manager. She has earned a reputation for being able to turn around troubled projects and implement them flawlessly.

DePaul iTea Seminar - Dr. Nichole Pinkard from DePaul University

Upsilon Pi Epsilon and the CDM Leadership Council are proud to sponsor the iTea seminar for Winter 2010. This program is designed specifically for students interested in discussing the career potential of a degree from DePaul's College of Computing and Digital Media. iTea seminars are particularly unique because they provide the attendees a chance to interact with the speaker and ask in-depth questions that an average seminar would not have time for. Find out how our speaker got started in the field, what her current projects are, or what her advice is to all those novices out there.

Space is limited and the event is just around the corner so if you're interested in attending be sure to RSVP to deltaupe@cdm.depaul.edu to reserve a spot. Refreshments will be provided at the event (and, yes, this does include tea). See you there!

DePaul iTea Seminar - Juan Bonfonte from Roundarch, Inc.

Find out how our speaker got started in the field, what his current projects are, or what his advice is to all those novices out there.

We are happy to welcome Juan Bonafonte from Roundarch Inc as our speaker for the Winter iTea seminar. During this seminar we will be examining how to think a little bit differently about creating rich internet applications. The idea that you can "do anything", is not too farfetched, as long as you are aware of the tools at your disposal. Also we will discuss how a platform such as Google Earth is applied to large scale application. The focus of the seminar will not be on any particular language or technology; but on the ideas behind trying to use any language or technology objectively.

The event will take place on...
Date: Tuesday, February 23rd
Time: 4:30-5:30pm
Location: Millennium Boardroom(CDM723)

Who is Juan Bonfonte?
Juan only claims he is lucky. But he's also a Sr Interactive Developer at Roundarch Inc, where lately he's been working on Stratalogica (www.stratalogica.com). When he's not being a programmer, you can find him somewhere on the north side of Chicago, for the most park just being normal. You can find out the latest things he's been up to at his blog: http://blog.juanbonfante.com.

Computer Science is a relatively young discipline. Yet despite its comparative youth, Computer Science has had an unparalleled effect on almost every aspect of contemporary life. Indeed it is difficult to predict the ultimate place of the computer in our world. It is the express purpose of Upsilon Pi Epsilon to promote the Computing Sciences and to encourage its contribution to the enhancement of knowledge.

In four short years UPE has had a significant impact at DePaul.  UPE organizes and sponsors numerous events each year on topics ranging from current trends in cognitive science to bioinformatics.  UPE also presents workshops on more practical matters such as funding a graduate education or round table discussions on conducting research in computer science.

A Letter to Our Membership

First, we would like to congratulate those of you who graduated this year. We would also like to welcome all the new UPE members. At the UPE Initiation Ceremony we inducted 180 new students. UPE remains the only international honor society in the Computing and Information Disciplines and DePaul's chapter remains the largest chapter of UPE in the world.

On June 1st, UPE held its general elections. We were please to see so much interest in the honor society. Your new UPE officers are...

  1. President - Jonathan Gemmell
  2. Vice President - Lisa Hisson
  3. Treasurer - Alia Bashir
  4. Assistant Treasurer - Bob Paulin
  5. Secretary - Ruchaneewan Susomboon
  6. Technical Committee - David Schmelzer
  7. Alumni Representative - Aviad Sheinfeld

All the UPE officers wish to extend a special thanks to our outgoing president, John Miklaszewski, for all his hard work and leadership. Few people realize how much time and effort he put into UPE.

Last year UPE achieved great success, bringing exciting events to DePaul like the Funding Opportunities Seminar, the Research in Computer Science Round Table, and the Natural Language Processing Seminar. UPE also actively participated in CTI events such as the Loop Involvement Fair, CTI Groundhog Day, and the CTI Research Symposium.

Next year we hope to repeat our success. We have already received generous financial support from DePaul's Student Affairs office to conduct a full day Symposium on Medical Informatics and Bioinformatics. The event will include tutorials, lectures from leading researchers and an overview of current research at DePaul. Furthermore, we will repeat our very popular Funding Opportunities Seminar. We are currently planning other events.

UPE remains dedicated to serving its members. If you would like to see a seminar on a particular subject, please let us know. Perhaps you know of a CTI event that could use UPE's support. Maybe you just have a simple suggestion on how we can improve our organization.

Finally, UPE relies on its members for support. If you would like to participate in UPE, we have many opportunities in web site design, event planning, database management, alumni relations, etc. We hope to hear from you.

Have a great summer,
Your UPE officers

CTI Research Symposium

UPE was proud to be part of the CTI Research Symposium (CTIRS). CTIRS is a research conference aimed at providing a forum for students (Ph.D., Masters and Bachelors) to present their research. Previously CTIRS was an internal conference intended for CTI students, but since 2006 it has been open to all students in local universities.

The Midwest Software Engineering Conference (MSEC) is a regional research conference, open to all industry practitioners, researchers, educators and students in Software Engineering in the Midwest region. The goal of MSEC is to provide a forum for them to present the current practices and experiences, the emerging technologies, and the latest research findings in Software Engineering. In 2006, the two conferences merged and held as parallel sessions in one event, The 2006 CTIRS/MSEC Conference.

UPE seminar on Natural Language Processing

Two of DePaul's very own presented their research on this fascinating subject.

Prof. Tomuro presented an overview of the field of Natural Language Processing, with emphases on current approaches and applications. She also discussed some theoretical topics in NLP including parsing algorithms. Slides

Prof. Wiemer-Hastings presented a portion of his current research. Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) are interactive programs that help students learn about some domain. Some ITSs are modeled after human tutors and require the students to compose their answers in their own language. Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) uses a vector-based representation to compare student answers to the tutor's expected answers. This talk will describe LSA and related techniques and their application to a variety of educational tasks. Slides
